PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Banks and post offices close almost everywhere on national holidays and in specific towns or villages on local holidays. In tourist areas, most of shops stay open.

DRIVING

Always carry your driving licence. Seat belts must be worn in front and back seats.

Under 13-year-olds not allowed in the front and baby or child seats are compulsory. At the intersection of roads of equal importance give way to the right. At roundabouts give way to the vehicle already on the roundabout.

Portuguese drink/driving laws are strict and rigidly adhered to. Speed limits: 50kph in built-up areas; 90kph on open roads; 120kph on motor ways. Never leave anything of value in your parked car, including passports, etc. Car robberies are not usual but sometimes they happen.
