The parish of Carvoeiro, decreed in 1985, belongs to the council of Lagoa. It's seat, Praia do Carvoeiro, was recently considered to be a small town in 19 of April 2001. With a long history, this picturesque fishermen village has become the main touristic centre of the council. Only 5km away from the city of Lagoa, Carvoeiro offers a variety of small beaches cut out by cliffs, with limpid water and fine sand. Thus, it is now a wonderful place to spend the summer holidays, which fits the residential tourism that has been growing lately. The Algar Seco is one of the most lovely spots of the parish, with its harmonious rocks that form natural windows and balconies over the sea. Walking along the sea is probably the best way for visitors to have a view on the parish, to appreciate not only the beauty of its beaches, but also the marvellous accounts let by history on its architectonic heritage: the portal of the ancient fortress, built in 1670, and the Chapel of Nª Sra da Encarnação, hanging over the sea, which was probably built before the fortress itself.
